Consumer companies rose slightly as oil prices retreated.
Walmart, which fell sharply last week due to a slowdown in same-store sales growth, has launched a low-priced fashion line called Scenario to appeal to younger consumers.
One strategist said Walmart's struggles was another indication of a "k-shaped" recovery.
"There were some signs that maybe the bottom slope of the 'k' was starting to improve," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "Over the last week or so, it doesn't look that way."
