Led by Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Rao Narender Singh, party leaders and workers staged a demonstration in Gurugram against the FIRs registered against Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and NSUI workers and student leaders for allegedly waving black flags at Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini during his visit to the city on August 21.Later, party leaders submitted a memorandum to the Gurugram Police Commissioner, demanding immediate, impartial and transparent action in the matter.Mr. Singh demanded withdrawal of the FIRs registered against Youth Congress and NSUI workers, as well as the district presidents of Gurugram Rural and Gurugram Urban. He also called for an immediate end to the alleged harassment and intimidation of Congress workers and their families.He also demanded independent medical examinations of youth workers, student leaders and district presidents who have alleged assault or harassment while in police custody. He also sought preservation of CCTV footage from the relevant locations and legal and departmental action against police personnel found responsible for any wrongdoing.Mr. Singh said right to peacefully protest and express one’s views was fundamental to a democracy. He warned that the alleged misuse of police machinery to suppress political dissent would not be tolerated. “Our youth workers, students and district presidents are the voice of democracy. Every attempt to silence that voice will be answered democratically,” he said.Gurugram Police had arrested eight Congress workers on charges related to obstructing VIP security arrangements, disrupting government duty and attempting to stop the Chief Minister’s convoy while displaying black flags. The protest was reportedly linked to concerns over infrastructure at Gurugram University.Following the incident, show-cause notices were issued to the Deputy Commissioners of Police (West) and Crime, fixing responsibility for the episode. Orders were also issued to suspend the Station House Officer of Civil Lines Police Station and several police personnel deployed with him.
