Search efforts continued Monday night for Juan Jose Mutilba Obregon, a 66-year-old Spanish IT businessman missing since Tuesday after falling off his sailboat while traveling from Sicily to Greece with his wife.

The couple departed Syracuse for Pylos on Monday. On Tuesday morning, Obregon caught a tuna and slipped while cleaning it, falling into the water.

His son Sergio told El Mundo his mother heard him shout, “turn off the engine.” The 67-year-old woman could not stop the vessel or contact authorities due to lacking cell service 150 miles offshore. On Friday, her mobile finally found a signal and she alerted a friend.

The former D’ors Informatica programmer and Mutrobe SL businessman retired in 2021. Italian authorities are leading search operations as the family remains in Pylos.
