While Crosby’s contract situation with the Pittsburgh Penguins has led to fresh trade speculation, McDavid’s long-term future in Edmonton has also sparked talk about where he could play next.Neither superstar has indicated that he wants to leave his current team. Still, recent comments from Sid Seixeiro and NHL Network’s E.J. Hradek has brought both superstars back into the NHL rumor mill.Is Sidney Crosby’s future with the Pittsburgh Penguins really in doubt?Sidney Crosby trade rumors were a major topic during the summer of 2024 when the Penguins captain was eligible for a contract extension. Some wondered whether he could eventually seek a move to teams such as the Colorado Avalanche or Montreal Canadiens.That speculation ended when Crosby signed a two-year extension with Pittsburgh on Sept. 16, 2024. However, with the 39-year-old again nearing the end of his current contract, Sid Seixeiro recently brought the trade talk back into the conversation.Speaking on his show last Wednesday, Seixeiro questioned whether Crosby would sign another extension with the Penguins. While he acknowledged Crosby’s long history and loyalty to the franchise, Seixeiro suggested that the veteran star could eventually grow tired of general manager Kyle Dubas’ rebuilding plans and ask for a trade. He mentioned the Montreal Canadiens, Crosby’s childhood team, as a possible destination.For now, though, there is little to suggest that a trade is actually coming. The Athletic’s Josh Yohe reported earlier this month that contract discussions between Crosby’s camp and the Penguins were expected to begin after the summer. Yohe believes Crosby could sign another one- or two-year deal with Pittsburgh.Where could Connor McDavid go if he leaves the Edmonton Oilers?Connor McDavid’s future has also become part of the rumor mill, despite the Oilers captain having only recently started a new two-year extension. His current deal runs through the 2027-28 season, but NHL Network’s E.J. Hradek recently discussed where McDavid could land if he decides to leave Edmonton.During an appearance on the Bleed Oil Blue podcast last Monday, Hradek said that he had heard from a couple of sources that McDavid could be open to joining the Philadelphia Flyers or Detroit Red Wings once his Oilers contract ends in 2028. Hradek also brought up the New York Rangers as another possible option, noting that New York could have plenty of cap space and the appeal of playing in one of hockey’s biggest markets.However, these are only possible landing spots rather than reports that McDavid plans to leave Edmonton. Hradek himself said he does not have a close relationship with McDavid, and there is no indication that the Oilers captain has requested a trade.Could Stanley Cup chances shape Connor McDavid's next move?According to Hradek, McDavid would likely want to join a team that gives him the best chance to win the Stanley Cup if he ever leaves Edmonton. That makes any prediction about his future difficult, especially with his contract still running for two more seasons.The Flyers, Red Wings and Rangers could all look very different by 2028. For now, Crosby’s future in Pittsburgh appears to have more immediate questions, while McDavid’s potential destinations remain a discussion about what could happen several years from now.
