The Southeast Human Rights Bureau (SEHRB) has demanded an independent investigation into the reported discovery and movement of hundreds of unidentified bodies from mortuaries in Imo State, raising concerns over the identities, circumstances of death and possible disappearance of the remains.
The group, in a statement issued on Monday, said reports and video footage purportedly showing the movement of large numbers of bodies from facilities including Ngor Okpala General Hospital and Mbieri General Hospital had raised serious questions that required urgent answers from the Imo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and relevant hospital authorities.
SEHRB said some of the bodies appeared to have been reduced to skeletal remains, adding that the unexplained movement of the remains could potentially compromise evidence needed to establish the identity and circumstances surrounding the deaths.
