The Islamic Republic has warned that vessels failing to comply with Tehran-mandated regulations for transiting the Strait of Hormuz could face fines, impoundment, or outright confiscation.
Reuters reported on Monday, August 24, that the "Gulf Strait Organization" issued a notice stating that ships violating the new transit rules in the Strait of Hormuz will face penalties ranging from monetary fines to seizure and confiscation.
According to the report, restrictions will not be limited solely to vessels directly breaching the rules set by the Islamic Republic.
The notice warned that vessels engaging in operational activities, including ship-to-ship transfers or cargo loading, with non-compliant ships could also be subjected to restrictions.
This warning comes amid a dramatic decline in vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Citing data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler, Reuters previously reported that only four vessels transited the waterway on Sunday, following 13 vessels on Saturday.
