Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Heavy rains dumped more than two months' worth of precipitation on Venezuela's capital in just 45 minutes, flooding a major highway, disrupting subway service and forcing emergency crews to rescue about 100 people, local authorities said.
The storm Saturday killed a woman and left six people missing across Caracas and two neighboring states in north-central Venezuela, El Tiempo reported. The flooding struck a region still recovering from two powerful earthquakes that killed more than 6,400 people exactly two months earlier.
The downpour lasted more than three hours, causing waterways across Caracas to overflow. The city is surrounded by mountains, where water can quickly build up and trigger flash floods and landslides.
