Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Scottie Scheffler played in the 2026 BMW Championship while struggling with hand, foot and mouth disease, the world's No. 1 golfer told reporters.
Scheffler spoke about the ailment Sunday in St. Louis. He finished tied for 12th in the tournament, at 7-under. He carded a 2-under 70 over his final 18 holes at Bellerive Golf Course.
"If I was smarter, maybe I would have pulled out," Scheffler said. "But I was playing so good, I felt like, if I could knock it out quickly and just get through the first couple rounds, I would still have a chance."
Scheffler opened the second tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs with a 2-over 72 in Thursday's first round. He followed with a 5-under 65 on Friday for his best round at the 2026 BMW Championship. Scheffler was 2-under Saturday, matching his final round score.
