The Telangana Human Rights Commission on Monday recommended urgent measures to improve infrastructure and basic amenities in government schools across the State.The Commission’s recommendation came in the August 3 case, when it took suo motu cognizance of media reports about students attending classes under trees, in verandahs and community buildings due to inadequate classrooms and facilities.Reports from Adilabad, Jangaon, Nalgonda and Suryapet districts revealed deficiencies including dilapidated classrooms, pending repairs and shortage of toilets. In Nalgonda’s Vootkur village, students were temporarily shifted under trees while damaged tin-roof classrooms were being repaired following heavy rains, it was found.The Commission, observing that such deficiencies affect students’ safety, health, dignity and education, while noting that Article 21 A’s Right to Education for safe and conducive learning environment, directed the Principal Secretary, School Education Department, to obtain reports from all District Educational Officers, and further directed the department to take up the issue with the Chief Secretary, and report the action taken within six months.
