The Malappuram District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered Apple and its authorised service centre to pay ₹1.09 lakh to a consumer over repeated defects in an iPhone 14 Plus during the warranty period.The order followed a complaint by T. Faisal from Tirur, who bought the phone and charger for ₹92,250 on September 13, 2023, for his son’s online classes.The phone developed excessive heating and a faulty camera soon after purchase. Despite several visits to an authorised service centre, the defects were not resolved.After examining the documents and an expert report, the commission held that the failure to fix the defects amounted to a deficiency in service and an unfair trade practice.The commission ordered a refund of ₹92,250, along with a fine of ₹10,000 for mental distress and ₹7,000 towards legal costs.The amount must be paid within 45 days.
