Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has registered a rise in vector-borne diseases in some areas and has intensified vector-control activities across the city.According to data compiled by the GCC, 3,326 houses were identified with larvae of aedes mosquitoes during checks conducted in the 15 zones of the city last week. As many as 4,029 containers were found positive for aedes larvae during the same period.The number of dengue cases in the first three weeks of August has been estimated at 302. The number of dengue cases in June was 137 while July registered 282 cases. A total of 363 dengue cases were reported in the city in August 2025. Ward 84 councillor J. John said the number of dengue cases has increased in areas such as TNHB layout in Korattur. “Dengue cases have been reported in Korattur TNHB 14th Street, 27thStreet in the past few days. A migrant labourer from Patna, who has been working in our ward, has also tested positive for dengue.”“We do not have adequate number of workers for vector control. GCC has hired only 10 employees in ward 84. Usually, around 18 employees work for vector control in each ward in the area. Owing to frequent protests by workers, various other activities, including vector control have been affected,” said Mr. John.Ward 104 councillor T.V. Shemmozhi said dengue cases have increased in many neighbourhoods.Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar registered the highest number of houses tested positive for aedes larvae, with 610 houses testing positive. Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur have also registered a large number of domestic areas testing positive for aedes larvae.GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said: “Dengue control measures have been carried out on a war footing. As many as 2,076 domestic breeding checkers have been engaged for door-to-door anti larval activities.” He said a total of 470 portable fogging machines are used every day for fogging to control aedes mosquitoes since it is a day-biter. Fever cases were identified among workers, and they were sent to nearby treatment facility, he said.Awareness has been created among public to remove small water retaining structures on their premises. Special drive on Sundays for new construction sites and source removal has also been conducted. Special attention has been given for schools, parks, and other public places, he added.
