Iranian Cyber Attack: Are UK Power Plants Safe from Hackers?

A small-scale British power plant was forced offline for four days last month after a cyber-attack attributed to hackers linked to Iran.

The incident, first reported by The Sunday Telegraph on 22 August, has been confirmed by the UK Government.

A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) sought to play down the wider implications.

“This story refers to an incident impacting a small-scale energy generator, and at no point was there a risk to the wider energy system,” they said.

DESNZ added that Britain's energy system is still highly resilient, saying: “We work closely with the energy sector to protect infrastructure and ensure the highest security standards.”
