Greek employees work many more hours than Europeans, produce much less per hour and are paid much less.
An aggregation of data published by Greece’s Hellenic Statistics Authority, the European Union’s Eurostat and other international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECS) is revealing.
To take one example, Greek employees in wholesale retail, transport, accommodation and catering work an average of 2,047 hours per person per year: Their counterparts in Spain work 1,703 hours, still more than in France (1,561) and Germany (1,302).
The EU average is 1,642 hours per person per year.
In other words, employees in Greece work about 25% more than their counterparts in Germany, almost 56 full 8-hour working days.
