Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a diplomatic solution to the Middle East crisis during talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Beijing on Monday.

“China has always advocated for a comprehensive ceasefire [and] resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means,” Xi said, according to China's foreign ministry.

He stressed that “the sovereignty and security of regional countries including Jordan should be respected”, while highlighting Jordan's “unique and important role in the region”.

Xi also called for a “comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue”, saying China supports the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks based on the “two-state solution”.

The talks came as Jordan finds itself caught between its alliance with the United States and the escalating confrontation between Washington, Israel and Iran.
