The study published in the journal ‘Small,’ describes that the material is designed to reflect sunlight while allowing heat to escape from the fabric. Outdoor tests found that it remained up to ‘6.2°C cooler’ than commercially dyed purple cotton under direct sunlight, while tests using simulated skin showed an even stronger cooling effect. The research, led by scientists at Zhengzhou University with involvement from Adelaide University, addresses a familiar problem with summer clothing that ‘darker colours tend to absorb more sunlight and become hotter.’ Purple presents a particular challenge because producing the colour normally involves absorbing green light, a strong part of sunlight. The new fabric takes a different approach, combining colour with cooling.The cooling mechanism of this new purple fabric The fabric is made from microscopic fibres containing a purple metal-organic framework(MOF), together with zinc oxide nanoparticles. The combination gives the material its colour while also helping it deal with sunlight and heat. The study reports that the material was produced using a one-step electrospinning method. According to Adelaide University, the fabric reflects an average of 87.6% of solar radiation. At the same time, it emits 96.4% of mid-infrared radiation. This allows heat held by the fabric to escape through the atmosphere rather than remaining trapped close to the body. The research paper provides further detail, reporting solar reflectance of 90.1% in visible light and 90.7% in the near-infrared range. Its high mid-infrared emission is linked to the structure of the MOF material used in the fibres. In simple terms, the fabric is designed to do two jobs at once, send much of the Sun's energy away and release heat that has already built up.Why is purple clothing difficult to keep coolWhite clothing has long been associated with hot weather for a simple reason that it reflects much of the sunlight that reaches it. Darker fabrics generally absorb more of that energy, causing them to heat up. Purple is especially difficult to use in cooling clothing because the colour requires the material to absorb green light. According to the Adelaide University report, green colour is one of the strongest parts of the solar spectrum. That creates a problem for researchers trying to make a fabric that is both visibly purple and capable of rejecting solar heat. The study describes an approach intended to overcome that trade-off. The researchers developed the material so that it could retain its purple appearance while reflecting a large proportion of incoming solar energy. According to Adelaide University's report, the new purple fabric was 4.2°C cooler than commercial white cotton and 6.2°C cooler than commercially dyed purple cotton. The comparison with purple cotton is particularly important. Conventional purple clothing can become noticeably warmer in direct sunlight because of the amount of solar energy absorbed by its dye. The new material therefore attempts to make purple clothing useful in conditions where ordinary coloured fabrics can become uncomfortable. The researchers also tested the material against simulated skin. Covered with the new fabric, the simulated skin was up to 8°C cooler during the day than uncovered simulated skin. White cotton produced a maximum reduction of 4.6°C, while conventional purple cotton produced a reduction of 2.8°C. These tests suggest that the fabric could have practical value for people who spend long periods outside in hot weather.Making the fabric comfortable for everyday clothingCooling performance alone would not make a material particularly useful if it were stiff, heavy or uncomfortable to wear. The researchers therefore looked at several other properties. Adelaide University reports that the new fabric is lightweight and flexible and can withstand significant stretching. It also allows water vapour, including perspiration, to pass through. That could be important for clothing because cooling a person is not much help if sweat becomes trapped against the skin. The material was also found to be highly water-repellent. More importantly, it retained its cooling performance after 50 washing cycles, suggesting that its properties did not disappear quickly with ordinary cleaning. The researchers also tested its resistance to ultraviolet radiation. The fabric retained its optical performance after high-intensity UV aging equivalent to around 108 days outdoors.Who could benefit from cooling coloured clothingThe technology could eventually be useful for anyone who spends considerable time outdoors, particularly during periods of extreme heat. Adelaide University co-author Yangzhe Hou, a PhD candidate in the School of Chemical Engineering, highlighted outdoor workers and athletes as possible beneficiaries. The research team is interested in fabrics that can help manage body temperature without requiring additional energy. That could make passive cooling clothing attractive in places where air conditioning is unavailable or impractical. Instead of using electricity to cool the surrounding environment, the clothing would work through its interaction with sunlight and heat. However, the research remains a development in advanced textiles rather than an immediately available replacement for everyday clothing. Further work would be needed before such materials became widely used commercially.Testing other colours for this cooling effectThe researchers say the approach could potentially be adapted to other colours by using different metal-organic frameworks with different optical properties. That could eventually allow cooling fabrics to move beyond the familiar white appearance associated with heat-reflecting clothing. For now, the purple material demonstrates that colour and cooling do not necessarily have to be opposites. The study shows that carefully designed fibres can produce a fabric that looks colourful while still reflecting substantial solar energy and releasing heat efficiently. As summers become increasingly difficult to endure, fabrics that do not ask people to choose between looking good and staying cool will become useful
