In 1915, the world came to San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts to see some of the planet’s greatest works of art. Just over 100 years later, Genesis executives posted up at the same historic place aiming to once again cause a stir. They succeeded. The global unveiling last week of the all-electric GV90 pulled the curtain back on what is by far the most arresting model ever produced by Genesis, which, for a decade, has been Hyundai’s standalone luxury brand.
When seen in person, the mammoth S.U.V. seems more like a luxury limo than a family hauler, featuring styling that recalls the largest of Range Rover’s offerings and, even more specifically, the Maybach version of Mercedes-Benz’s GLS. We’ll get into the details, but the real standout is the optional Neolun Arch Gate, which is an ingenious coach door that does without the structural support of an intersecting B-pillar.

“The GV90 is a declaration of the success of the brand in its first 10 years, and its platform is the foundation of the next 10 years,” says Tedros Mengiste, C.O.O. of Genesis North America, adding that the company “isn’t chasing anybody. We are a Korean brand, and we have a specific culture where you feel like you’re an honored guest. When you experience it, you know what it is.”
