Gameweek 1 is almost in the books and while it may still be early days, there was plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to digest. Arsenal began where they left off, Brighton & Hove Albion put Aston Villa to the sword, Manchester United suffered the shock of the weekend and Liverpool needed a last-minute penalty to rescue a point at Newcastle United. A few players have already shown they could become unexpected central figures over the coming weeks. Let’s look at the main FPL talking points from the weekend’s action. Have Arsenal just signed the best option in FPL?Arsenal made a statement with their comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry City. From an FPL perspective, Mikel Arteta’s back line continues to look like one of the best places to invest. Ben White (£5.5m) and Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) are excellent options, particularly for their attacking threat. Both picked up an assist to go with the clean sheet. And an even more enticing option could be emerging.Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) has signed for Arsenal and could be a game-breaking pick. Arsenal have plenty of quality in defence, but he will probably begin ahead of Cristhian Mosquera (£5.5m) in the pecking order.White and Calafiori remain the more proven picks in FPL, particularly for those looking for attacking upside, but we should monitor Konsa closely.At £4.5m, it would not take much to make him the most popular defender in the game. Don’t panic over Manchester United… yet The shock of the gameweek came at the MKM Stadium, where promoted Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0.Michael Carrick’s side were poor, but let’s not overreact. Poor performances from Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) will be causing some concern for FPL owners, particularly against a side many tipped to struggle in the top flight. However, it is worth holding onto them for at least one more gameweek. United face Ipswich Town at home next — another great fixture on paper. It gives their players an immediate opportunity to respond, and fantasy managers should have more information after another 90 minutes. Would Baleba solve Man Utd's midfield problems?JJ BullIf things still do not improve, Gameweek 3 looks like a more logical time to move them on, with trickier fixtures to come against Everton (A) and Manchester City (H).For now, patience is the best approach. Players should hold on to Bruno Fernandes and other Manchester United players for at least another week (Paul Ellis/AFP via Getty Images)Brighton’s surprise FPL starsArguably the most impressive side of the weekend, Brighton hammered Aston Villa 4-0. It is worth acknowledging that Unai Emery was dealing with a depleted squad, so perhaps we should not read too much into the result from a Villa perspective.Nevertheless, Brighton were excellent and there were several players who caught the eye. Jack Hinshelwood (£6.0m) was the obvious headline-maker after scoring a brace. But the most interesting Brighton asset was actually Maxim De Cuyper (£4.5m). Listed as a defender in FPL, De Cuyper was deployed on the left wing in the absence of Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m). De Cuyper registered a goal, an assist and a clean sheet for a remarkable 17-point haul — exactly the kind of out-of-position performance that FPL managers look for. Unless Brighton sign cover for Minteh, who is out until November, we can assume De Cuyper will continue to operate in an advanced role. There is one reason to perhaps hold off for now, though, as Brighton travel to Chelsea next. Rather than rushing in, Gameweek 3 could be a better entry point. Brighton then face Leeds United at home and Coventry away, two fixtures that look significantly more appealing. De Cuyper is one to watch, especially as Brighton are also a good defensive side. They ended last season with the third-fewest goals conceded (46) and the fourth-best expected goals conceded (48.87), suggesting they restricted their opponents to very few chances.Dominik Szoboszlai, our new FPL midfield starLiverpool escaped Newcastle with a 2-2 draw thanks to a last-minute penalty, but it was not the most convincing performance from Andoni Iraola’s side. From an FPL perspective, however, one moment stood out above everything else. Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) stepped up to take the penalty. Szoboszlai took penalties last season in Salah’s absence, but it was good to get some sort of confirmation.At £7.0m, Szoboszlai offers outstanding value if he has regular penalty duties, alongside already taking the majority of free kicks and corners. The other positive is his minutes. Florian Wirtz (£7.5m) was substituted at around 63 minutes, pushing Szoboszlai, who played the whole game, further forward. Staying on the pitch matters in FPL, particularly for midfielders who pick up points from multiple routes. While Liverpool were not particularly convincing against Newcastle, I would not let one underwhelming performance put you off Szoboszlai. He may not have the same glamour as some of the other midfielders, but at his price, he looks like a season-long set-and-forget option.
