The New York Giants are less than a week away from having to cut down their roster from 90 players to 53.All the practices, two preseason games and a dominant joint session with the Miami Dolphins have helped inform the coaching staff and front office about who should make the roster. But there’s still one more week, including Friday’s preseason date with the New York Jets, to determine the final sheet. So, players on the roster bubble have a few more days to prove themselves before decisions are made Sunday.Let’s take a look at where we think things stand right now:Top Plays from Giants @ DolphinsQuarterbacks: 2In: Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston
Out: Brandon Allen, Jake HaenerDart and Winston are locked in. However, the Giants shook up the room by adding Haener following the first preseason game, after a poor performance by Allen. Haener played a little in Saturday’s game, but the odds of this team carrying a third quarterback on its opening 53-man roster feel highly unlikely.Running backs: 4In: Cam Skattebo, Najee Harris, Devin Singletary, Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Out: Eric Gray, Damon BankstonWill the Giants keep three running backs or four? I think it could go either way, but at this stage in the process, I convinced myself to go with four. Maybe that will look foolish in a week, but given how run-heavy this offense intends to be and the injury histories at play here, keeping four quality veterans made sense. Remember, Skattebo is coming off a serious ankle injury, and his running style welcomes contact, while Harris tore his Achilles last year. Before Saturday’s game, I debated cutting Singletary, which would save the Giants $1.3 million with a $1.25 million dead cap hit. But Singletary’s 40 yards and a touchdown helped convince me to keep him on my projected roster. Tracy’s rough performance, however, did make me question the order of the backs. He’s been the presumed No. 2 behind Skattebo, but his fumble Saturday, on top of the missed blocking assignment that got Dart walloped in the opener, could cause his stock to fall.Wide receivers: 6In: Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Malachi Fields, Calvin Austin III, Braxton Berrios
