Lithuania’s government has approved €56.6 million to build and renovate schools in Vilnius and Kaunas for the children of German troops stationed in the country.
Plans include a new school for around 500-600 pupils on Drujos Street in Vilnius, and the reconstruction of an existing school on Verkių Street in Kaunas to accommodate roughly 200 pupils.
The Vilnius project has been allocated €45.87 million, with a further €10.75 million earmarked for Kaunas. Both will be funded through the state budget and government borrowing, covering design, construction, equipment and other costs.
The Kaunas school is expected to open in September 2028, with the new Vilnius facility due for completion no later than 2032.
The investment follows a defence cooperation agreement between Lithuania and Germany, under which Lithuania committed to providing educational infrastructure for the children of German personnel and their families.
