With the New England Patriots resting most of their starters this preseason, we’ve gotten an extended look at the players on the roster bubble. That’s by design. Coach Mike Vrabel said Saturday night after his team’s 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles that he doesn’t feel this roster is very deep, so he doesn’t want to risk starters getting injured. So expect another week with a lot of reps for backups as attention turns to the preseason finale on Thursday night in Cleveland. The Pats will have only two practices before then. That matchup against the Browns will be a final chance for players to make an impression. So entering the last week before roster cuts are due Aug. 30, here’s how we see things shaking out.Could AJ Brown help New England Patriots return to Super Bowl?Robert Mays and Derrik KlassenQuarterbackIn: Drake Maye, Tommy DeVito, Behren MortonOut: NoneMorton made things fun against the Eagles, showcasing his punting ability in addition to playing quarterback in the second half. Morton was also a kicker and punter during his high school days in Texas, so maybe he can convince Vrabel to let him try an extra point on Thursday. Either way, look for a lot of snaps for Morton in the finale.Running backIn: Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Reggie Gilliam, Lan LarisonOut: Jam Miller, Hassan Haskins, JaMycal HastyI was tempted to keep only two running backs, considering the team could simply use practice-squad elevations for at least the first two weeks of the season. That’s a possibility, especially if Thursday is a quiet game for Larison. But Vrabel liked the way Larison ran in the second half of Saturday’s game, calling it a “gritty, tough performance.” Thursday’s game will still be important for this competition, but Larison may have done enough against the Eagles to be on the right side of the roster bubble.Wide receiverIn: A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, Efton ChismOut: Kyle Dixon, Nick DeGennaro, Cameron Dorner, Kobe Prentice, Tejhaun PalmerThe Patriots seemed to be trending toward keeping seven wide receivers entering Saturday’s game, and that likely solidified it. Chism was impressive and showed he deserves a spot as Douglas’ backup, and Williams caught a 69-yard touchdown that overshadowed some earlier mishaps and highlighted his potential.Top Plays from Eagles @ PatriotsTight endIn: Hunter Henry, Eli Raridon, Tanner ArkinOut: Jack Westover, CJ DippreWestover has been plenty versatile for the Pats, but they need a true blocker in that No. 3 tight end job, and that’s where Arkin has a big advantage. That said, it’ll be interesting to see whether offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels uses Arkin or Caleb Lomu during the regular season when they want a jumbo tight end in short-yardage situations.Offensive lineIn: Will Campbell, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Jared Wilson, Mike Onwenu, Morgan Moses, Caleb Lomu, Marcus Bryant, Dametrious Crownover, Greg Van RotenOut: James Hudson III, Mehki Butler, Lorenz Metz, Jacob Rizy, JonDarius Morgan, Darrian Dalcourt, Joe MichalskiInjured: Ben BrownThe drawback here is that without Brown, there’s no true backup center. But the Patriots likely think they could get Rizy onto the practice squad and activate him when needed. Hudson struggled against the Eagles and may have lost his spot even with the lack of depth at guard — though if Bryant’s ankle injury is serious, it could put Hudson back on the team.Van Roten provides some much-needed insurance on the interior of the O-line, having started 17 games in each of the last three seasons. For the Pats to avoid the worst-case scenario, they need Wilson to stay healthy and play well.Defensive lineIn: Dre’Mont Jones, Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Gabe Jacas, Elijah Ponder, Cory Durden, Joshua Farmer, Eric Gregory, Quintayvious HutchinsOut: Bradyn Swinson, Leonard Taylor III, Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Jesse Luketa, Xavier Holmes, Isaiah Iton, Casey RogersInjured: Harold Landry IIILandry still hasn’t practiced all offseason, and it’s now fair to ask whether he’ll open the season on the PUP list, which would force him to miss the first four games. Either way, his absence will test the New England edge rushers. Jacas had some nice moments against the Eagles, but he also had a roughing-the-passer penalty that negated an interception. The big decision may come down to Hutchins or Swinson. When Vrabel talks about a lack of depth, this is one of several areas he’s likely referring to.LinebackerIn: Robert Spillane, Christian Elliss, K.J. Britt, Namdi Obiazor, Chad MumaOut: Amari Gainer, Riley Wilson, Khalil JacobsThe depth here isn’t great either, and it was an issue during joint practices with the Eagles. If Muma and others in this group struggle again this week, perhaps the Patriots will turn to the waiver wire in search of reinforcements.CornerbackIn: Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Kindle Vildor, Charles Woods, Karon PruntyOut: Kobee Minor, Marcellas Dial Jr., Brandon Crossley, Channing Canada, Kenneth HarrisVildor entered the Eagles game on the roster bubble and was probably the team’s best cornerback. Canada still has an outside chance of making the team and could leapfrog Prunty. It’ll be worth monitoring how each of them plays on Thursday.SafetyIn: Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson, Dell Pettus, John Saunders Jr.Out: Mike Brown, Peter Manuma, Eric ButlerInjured: Brenden SchoolerSchooler remains on the PUP list and hasn’t practiced this summer. He’s a big loss to the team’s special teams, but also its safety depth. Saunders keeps making plays in practice and may have earned a roster spot in the last week. Brown had an interception in joint practices against the Eagles, but it may not be enough to beat out Saunders.Special teamsIn: Andy Borregales, Bryce Baringer, Julian AshbyOut: NoneAn uneventful game for Borregales on Saturday night was a welcome sight after he missed three field goals in the preseason opener.
