After a two-month break in play for the World Cup and the cramming of Leagues Cup, basically every single MLS team is crawling through massive fixture congestion in the dog days of summer.It’s hot and humid, a big country to travel around, plus most teams played seven games in the first 22 days of the month. Others, like the Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake, play nine in 29 days. Those two teams completely rotated this weekend.Sometimes, it’s hard to know what’s real and what’s a one-off at this time of the year. For this week’s edition of The Verdict, here are three things from the weekend that were real and consequential, not a late-summer mirage:Nashville is the best team in the leagueWhile Nashville SC plays some of the most attractive and exciting soccer in the league, their wins have often been straightforward this year. They dominate teams and turn that advantage into goals. Then they see out wins.This weekend didn’t follow that script, with one of the most dramatic comeback wins you’ll see in MLS this season, scoring twice in stoppage time to turn a 2-1 deficit to a stunning 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew.The win gives them a 10-point cushion over Inter Miami in the East and a nine-point lead in the Supporters’ Shield race over the Vancouver Whitecaps. The team is on pace for 79 points, which would set a new league record.The Shield is Nashville’s to lose at this moment, with 13 games left in the season. Perhaps there will be twists and turns but the more interesting discussion is if they can break Inter Miami’s record of 74 points in a season, set in 2024. That in and of itself is a feat by this team.Nashville has one of the league’s best goalkeepers in Brian Schwake, three match-winners on the back line (it was center back Jeisson Palacios’ slip ball through to right back Andy Najar for the winner), midfield pieces that fit the team to support as many as four match-winners in attack. All of the individual talent is within a team that maximizes their skillsets and a coach who is proactive in making slight tweaks to keep everything fresh.Nashville is the best team in MLS.Antoine Griezmann is worth every pennyAntoine Griezmann scored twice in Orlando City’s 2-1 win over a rotated Real Salt Lake team and, after starting the season near the bottom of the East, Orlando is above the playoff line in ninth place.Griezmann has been at the center of everything the team has done going forward, whether the goals are going in or not. He makes players around him better — whether it’s 19-year-old academy product Justin Ellis, who likes half-spaces and drifting; target forward Daryl Dike; Croatia international winger Marco Pasalic; or Brazilian 21-year-old Tiago, who can play through the center or as a winger.Antoine Griezmann’s start to MLS life has been everything Orlando was hoping for.
