Twenty-one former international cricket captains, including India’s Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar, on Sunday urged Pakistan to ensure that former Prime Minister Imran Khan is examined by a medical board, as directed by the country’s Supreme Court, The Hindu reported.In a letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the former captains said that any treatment recommended by the board, which would comprise his personal doctors and his sister Uzma Khan, should be administered to Khan without delay. Before entering politics, Khan was the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team intermittently between 1982 and 1992. The 73-year-old was arrested in August 2023 and has been in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail since September 2023. He is facing several criminal cases, mostly linked to alleged corruption.On August 18, Pakistan’s Supreme Court directed the authorities to take Khan to hospital within 48 hours. He was expected to remain in hospital till September 16.The court’s directive had met a longstanding demand by Khan’s political party and his family, who have been raising concerns about his health and poor incarceration conditions.However, Khan was shifted back to prison after a brief visit to an Islamabad hospital on Friday. On Sunday, the former cricket captains pointed out that Khan spent “only a few hours” at the hospital, was examined by a state-appointed medical team and taken back to Adiala jail before the court-directed board could complete its assessment.The medical board should be allowed to conduct a full and independent assessment, particularly because of reports that Khan has suffered a significant loss of vision in his right eye, they said. They also demanded that Khan’s family should be allowed to visit him weekly without interruption or administrative delays.“Whatever the legal and political arguments surrounding his case, the basic decency of ensuring a court-ordered medical process is actually completed is not, in our view, a controversial request,” the letter said.BREAKING NEWS: 22 Former international cricket captains have once again written a letter to Pakistan PM over the treatment for Imran Khan.
