Redland City Council has released plans to build an outdoor lagoon that the acting mayor has said will be "better than Brisbane's" South Bank Beach.Today, the council released the final plans and artist impressions of its Birkdale Community Precinct, a 62 hectare tourism and leisure zone about 23 kilometres from Brisbane.The lagoon will be next to the controversial Whitewater Centre, which will be used for slaloming in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. (Supplied: Redland City Council)The precinct would include a 2,000-square-metre lagoon, zip-line, hotels, restaurants, event venue, bushwalking track and a "dive-in" movie screen to watch from the pool.Acting Mayor Julie Talty said construction would start mid-2027 and it would, hopefully, be open by 2030.Cr Talty hit back at criticisms the Whitewater Centre would be a continual drain on the local economy after the Olympics had come and gone.The Whitewater Centre would be maintained and run by council at ratepayers' expense.However, Cr Talty said the council's financial modelling suggested the Whitewater Centre would pay for itself and also subsidise the cost of the lagoon precinct. Opponents of the Whitewater Centre have said it is a waste of money.(ABC News: Kenji Sato)"We've got a small minority of naysayers in this city who want to shout 'white elephant' every time it's mentioned," Cr Talty said."I've been in council for 14 years and the one thing the community have been asking for the whole time is a lagoon like South Bank."It will be better than Brisbane's [lagoon]."For a small council like us, we don't have the ability to provide that standalone, but the opportunity of the Olympics and the Whitewater Centre means we can do all of this."Cr Talty said the Whitewater Centre would be used as a lazy river when it was not being used by athletes or emergency service training programs.Email address
