Speaking on the National Treasure Hunt podcast, Turteltaub revealed that Disney has approved a newly developed script for the third installment. The director stated he hopes to bring back the original cast, including lead actor Nicolas Cage, to whatever extent possible. The original 2004 film and its 2007 sequel, Book of Secrets, were both major box-office successes, grossing over $800m globally combined. The development follows the cancellation of the Disney+ spin-off series National Treasure: Edge of History after a single season in 2023.
