THE title of the German hard-rock band Scorpions’ hit song is applicable to what is happening to our newspaper currently. Indeed, “The winds of change” are blowing through the offices of POST newspaper. Besides being taken over by National Media Group, our esteemed title has got a new helmsman, Executive Editor Mervyn Naidoo. He is no stranger to the paper, as he served as a sports writer for POST and he served time on other titles in the group.
A warm welcome back home to Naidoo, whom I had the pleasure of working with in my tenure as POST sub-editor. Here’s what I discovered about him.
On first impression, he comes across as slightly reticent. However, as I got to know him, I discovered a refined gentleman with a wide and varied general knowledge, impeccable manners and highly capable in the field of media.
At that time, I was also a national radio presenter of a popular music show. Here is where I discovered Naidoo’s vast knowledge of music, and we savoured chats on the topic. One topic stays in my memory all these years later. He asked me if I had heard Michael Jackson’s early song called “Ben”.
