At a club where tradition and history are sacrosanct, maybe Nottingham Forest’s defeat to Leeds United should not have come as a surprise.But while their new coach Oliver Glasner maintained an unwanted record by becoming the club’s fifth consecutive manager to lose his first Premier League game in charge, the mood this time should be very different.Glasner’s four most recent predecessors, Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou, Sean Dyche and Vitor Pereira, all took over at a time of crisis, when positive results were required to improve a bleak outlook at the City Ground.Nuno stepped in to replace the popular Steve Cooper in December 2023, with Forest in danger of losing their fight against top-flight relegation. Postecoglou was appointed after Nuno — who had just led Forest into the Europa League — effectively talked himself out of a job, amid a very public falling out over recruitment.Dyche was then drafted in to pick up the pieces after Postecoglou’s disastrous 39-day tenure — before it became evident the former Burnley and Everton manager had quickly lost the backing of the dressing room’s senior figures. Pereira came in to lead Forest away from relegation and ensure a season of chaos did not end with a return to the Championship.Since Glasner’s appointment in early July to replace Pereira, there has been a rare mood of stability. This was day one of the new project, which the club hope will ultimately establish them as a Premier League force.And, while this was definitely not the start Glasner wanted, one disappointing defeat should not be allowed to dent the mood — or change that outlook.This was not a vintage Forest performance. For long spells it looked to be exactly what it was: a first Premier League outing for a squad of players still coming to terms with a new head coach, a new mentality and a new set of expectations.
