Fresh charges have been laid over alleged corruption by dozens of individuals within several North Island prisons.Twenty-four people have now been charged as a result of an investigation that spanned almost a year, including Corrections officers, reintegration officers and members of the public associated with prisoners.An additional 33 charges were laid - on top of the 108 already laid - in Auckland District Court on Monday, including for offering or accepting bribes.Police said the charges of bribery and corruption were so serious, they required the Attorney-General's consent to prosecute.Most of the accused appeared in court on Monday, some of them in custody, others on bail.Some of them entered not guilty pleas to the new charges. Others were remanded without plea until their next court appearance.All 24 currently accused have interim name suppression, with at least one day in October set aside to determine whether this should continue.Judge Simon Lance also set the matter down for a case review hearing in December.Police began investigating criminal activity at the Mt Eden Corrections Facility in July 2025.Detective Inspector Colin Parmenter, of the national organised crime group, has previously said that the investigation initially focused on the activities of sentenced and remand prisoners at Mt Eden."We will allege that some of those prisoners were co-ordinating drug importations and drug-related transactions from within prison."Corrections Officers were also allegedly identified as being involved in the offending, he said."Several staff working in Mt Eden were allegedly involved in smuggling mobile phones, drugs, tobacco and other contraband into prison in exchange for cash," Parmenter said."Police believe the phones were used by prisoners to continue drug importation and distribution activities from within the Mt Eden facility."The investigation then moved to the Auckland South Correctional Facility based in Wiri.Parmenter said the investigation uncovered several reintegration officers, employed by private prisons contractor Serco, "allegedly engaging in similar corrupt practices"."It will be alleged this involved smuggling controlled drugs and tobacco for financial gain."Other charges include conspiring to sell cannabis and supply methamphetamine to unknown prisoners remanded at Mt Eden.Deputy Commissioner for Men's Prisons Dave Pattinson previously said criminal activity in prisons would not be tolerated and that any staff taking part in this sort of activity would be found and held to account."Corrections employs approximately 11,000 staff and the overwhelming majority act with integrity, professionalism and honesty in what is an extremely demanding and often dangerous job working with New Zealand's most dangerous offenders."
