The sources spoke anonymously because they were not yet authorized to speak publicly. The Saints were looking for running back depth, with Alvin Kamara out at least a month with a knee injury, and one of San Francisco’s backup linebackers, Nick Martin, injured his hamstring in Thursday’s preseason game. Martin has been backing up Dre Greenlaw, who has been beset by injuries the past two seasons, at weakside linebacker. Two other linebackers — Luke Gifford (hamstring) and Jalen Graham (undisclosed) — also have missed recent practices.Jones, 31, is a 2016 second-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons who spent five seasons in Atlanta with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The 49ers’ recently precarious running back situation, meanwhile, has looked better in recent days, as Kaelon Black, Jordan James and, on Sunday, Christian McCaffrey returned to practice. Those three are likely to be the only tailbacks on the 53-man roster to start the season. Another, Isaac Guerendo, is coming back from a torn pectoral muscle suffered in April. This story will be updated.
