Los Angeles, ranked America’s third-wealthiest urban centre by millionaire population, has hosted the return of 48 ancient artefacts to Egypt after an FBI investigation found that the objects had been illegally trafficked into the United States.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation handed the collection to Egyptian officials in Los Angeles on August 21, 2026, following a probe by its Art Crime Team, according to the New York Post.
Los Angeles ranks as America’s third-wealthiest urban centre by millionaire population, behind New York and the Bay Area. Its deep private wealth and large art market make the city an important centre for high-value cultural assets, including antiquities.
More broadly, the return adds to a growing number of cases in which US authorities, museums and other institutions have repatriated cultural property to African countries.
The Egyptian collection includes carved figures, amulets, funerary objects and tomb equipment from the Pharaonic, Roman and Coptic periods. Some of the pieces are thousands of years old.
