A crowded summer scene on New York’s Coney Island boardwalk took an unexpected turn when an environmental conservation police officer spotted a man showing off two snakes to a group of people, including children.
The encounter happened on July 12 near the Riegelmann Boardwalk, where the larger of the two reptiles was identified by its owner as a Burmese python.
The snake was not simply an unusual attraction for passers-by: keeping a Burmese python as a pet is illegal in New York state.
The officer issued the man a ticket and confiscated the snake, which was later taken to the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for care.
State officials did not disclose the python’s length, although photographs showed two officers handling the large snake.
