Recent headlines have been dominated by the travails aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier deployed to the Middle East in support of U.S. actions against Iran.Senate Democrats recently sent a letter to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth demanding information about “mounting evidence that conditions aboard the carrier have deteriorated to the point that the safety and wellbeing of its crew could be compromised.” According to the letter, family members have received messages about food and water shortages, broken plumbing, exhaustion, and mental health issues serious enough that sailors have attempted to jump overboard. “These are deeply troubling reports, and the American people deserve honest answers,” the letter reads.In response to the news reports and congressional action, the Commander of U.S. Central Command, Adm. Brad Cooper, visited the ship and acknowledged the difficulty of the deployment. He also praised the crew for its performance and resiliency. As the congressional letter observes, the American people do indeed deserve honest answers. Unfortunately, the affair has become mired in partisan politics.
