Starring Hannah Einbinder, Gillian Anderson, Jack Haven, Patrick Fischler. 15A cert, gen release, 108 minThe director of I Saw the TV Glow casts Einbinder as an indie film-maker approaching Anderson’s ageing star about a reboot of an ancient slasher franchise in which the veteran starred. Anderson has a ball channelling Gloria Swanson, but the supposedly erotic conceit is too comical to blaze up the screen. The script is obsessed with the orgasm as a nexus of annihilation, but that idea, ironically, is less sexy than the film’s fixation with sweets. Miasma may be the film-maker’s narratively least satisfying film. Its restless reckoning with how horror movies work is, however, seldom dull. TB Full reviewCoyote vs Acme ★★★★Directed by Dave Green. Adapted from a brilliant 1990 New Yorker piece by Ian Frazier, Green’s zesty film makes – sorry, Space Jam fans – the best use yet of Looney Tunes’ immortal characters on the big screen. Daffy Duck is struggling with his mental health. Foghorn Leghorn is a robber baron. And this is the film Warner Bros famously considered “writing off”? Starring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Michelle Buteau, Anna Faris, Erika Heynatz, Dominic Ona-Ariki. 15A cert, gen release, 97 minThe four women mentioned above go on a spa weekend with predictably unamusing results. This latest outbreak of lads or lassies behaving badly stars Faris as the put-upon one, Buteau as the assertive one, Mann as the workaholic one and Fisher as the insane one. The closest it gets to the borderline-transgressive fun of Bridesmaids is when Buteau’s character makes some decent old-lady gags about her former partner’s superannuated girlfriend. Elsewhere, the comedy is mostly about driving golf carts over sand dunes and misidentifying coppers as strippers. Nothing here will shock (or even awaken) the frailest maiden aunt. Starring RuPaul Charles, Ginger Minj, Jujubee, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Latrice Royale. 15A cert, gen release, 90 minNinety-minute drag comedy, set in the RuPaul’s Drag Race universe, that puts two train hostesses at the controls of a runaway luxury express headed towards a once-in-a-century storm. The production’s make-do aesthetic could make-do better. The hideous AI backdrops are a disappointing substitute for painted matte work, rear projection and theatrical artifice. Too often the visual effects are like being trapped in a Rusical rendition of Harlan Ellison’s I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. No matter. The performers keep this peculiar train moving.
