The Kansas City Chiefs had more things go their way in Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers than the week before, yet it still ended in the same result of a loss. Additionally, the visitors were hit with a pair of injuries by the time the dust settled on the club's second preseason game of 2026. Two players, safety Alohi Gilman and defensive end Tyreke Smith, were ruled out by Kansas City on Saturday via social media. Gilman's designation came concurrently with the start of action at Raymond James Stadium, which saw him fail to play a single snap alongside the rest of the starters. Smith's ailment popped up in the second half of play, resulting in him not returning. What's the latest scoop? Speaking to the media following Saturday's 16-15 shortcoming in Tampa, head coach Andy Reid provided an update. It appears to be nothing major for Gilman, but there's more evaluating that needs to be done on the Smith front. "As far as the injuries go, Alohi, in warmups, had some low-back spasms," Reid said. "So he didn't play, and then Tyreke Smith tweaked his right hamstring. I'm not sure how bad that is, but it was bad enough where he couldn't continue on there." No injury can ever be determined a positive, but it is a silver lining for the Chiefs that Gilman avoided anything serious. The offseason free agent pickup is expected to be a playmaker in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defensive backfield, and he's endeared himself to fellow teammates by stepping up as a leader. Losing him for any portion of the regular season would've bordered on catastrophic depending on the timeline. The bad news for Smith is he desperately needed a strong performance and some luck to potentially make the final 53-man roster ahead of the regular season. Given that George Karlaftis, Ashton Gillotte, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, R Mason Thomas and newcomer Emmanuel Ogbah were all viewed as above him on the depth chart at a minimum, getting banged up is undoubtedly a tough break. The 26-year-old played 19 defensive snaps and another six on special teams a week ago against the Los Angeles Rams, recording a tackle on the opening kickoff but failing to register another box score statistic the rest of the way. In his work versus the Buccaneers, he had a lone solo tackle. An already less-than-100% Chiefs team continued to get some bad luck on the health front this weekend, although the majority of its starters remain unscathed with one preseason contest remaining.
