Huh / Associated PressAug. 22, 2026 6:57 pm EDT Updated Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said embattled second baseman Ketel Marte hadn’t broken any rules when he was seen at a Phoenix-area casino during Friday’s home victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field, but acknowledged Saturday that the optics of Marte’s decision weren’t great.“It’s not a choice I would make; I’m sure it’s not a choice a lot of people in this room would make,” Lovullo said before Saturday’s game against the Reds. “But Ketel is a grown man, and he can make his own decisions. He did not break any rules, he was fully able to go there and do what he wanted to do. Like I said, he makes his own decisions.”The Diamondbacks originally placed Marte on the restricted list after he failed to show up for the team’s game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Monday, then transferred him from the restricted list to the injured list on Thursday with left knee inflammation.Lovullo, who was first asked about video and pictures of Marte at Talking Stick Resort following Friday’s game, said the team has a plan for Marte to address teammates when he comes off the injured list.Marte is rehabbing at the Diamondbacks’ spring training complex, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, which is in Scottsdale. The casino where he was spotted is located directly across a freeway from the complex.He is eligible to return from the IL on Aug. 30, which is an off day for the Diamondbacks before they play a three-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies.Arizona entered Saturday’s game against the Reds one game behind the San Diego Padres for the National League’s third wild-card spot.Lovullo said Marte worked out Saturday under team supervision, but is limited to throwing and “some upper body training.” The Diamondbacks manager said Marte has a scheduled day off Sunday and will “ramp up” his rehab, including swinging the bat, on Monday.
