The Los Angeles Rams are set to play their second preseason game on Saturday as they take on the New Orleans Saints at SoFi Stadium. All eyes will be on quarterback Ty Simpson to see if he can follow up last week’s breakout performance with another good game. Against the Kansas City Chiefs, Simpson went 21-for-25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns. While a lot wasn’t asked of Simpson, he arguably had the best performance of the week among the rookie quarterbacks. Simpson wasn’t asked to push the ball downfield often, but when he did, he did so with accuracy. By the fourth quarter, Simpson had gained confidence in every throw and the Rams allowed him to let it loose a little bit. Following Simpson’s performance, the Rams have a decision to make when it comes to their backup quarterback battle. Throughout training camp, the Rams have given Stetson Bennett all of the backup quarterback reps. With Simpson playing well, the Rams may have to acknowledge that the rookie quarterback is ready for that next step. However, it’s one thing to play well in one game. Simpson will need to build on that with another strong performance. That doesn’t mean he needs to be perfect. With that said, if Simpson shows the same level of poise and confidence in the offense, it may be enough. At the very least, Simpson has put some pressure on Bennett for the backup quarterback role. Heading into the preseason, it didn’t appear to be much of a competition. After his performance against the Chiefs, Simpson has made it a legitimate competition. With another strong performance, it will be difficult for the Rams to justify keeping the rookie third on the depth chart. Simpson will need to perform better than he did in Thursday’s joint practice. On Thursday, Simpson threw an interception while splitting reps with Bennett for the first time. One interception isn’t the end of the world in practice, but he still needs to play well in Saturday’s game. If this does become more of a competition, Simpson will need to rise to the occasion. While many will be excited to see how Simpson performs against the Saints, we’ll be tracking all of the action right here in our live blog.
