Former West Bromwich Albion player Quevin Castro has died during a game on Saturday morning.Castro, aged 25, was playing for Portuguese third-tier team Real Sport Clube (known locally as Real Massama) in a friendly against top-flight opponents Estrela da Amadora when the incident took place. The game was being played at the Estadio das Seixas in Malveira, a town in the north of Lisbon.A statement from the Lisbon Football Association (AFL) confirmed that Castro “passed away this morning during the pre-season friendly.” The statement from the AFL also described the incident as “tragic.”The match was subsequently postponed and heartfelt condolences have followed, including a statement from his club which read: “It is with deep sadness and immense grief that Real Sport Clube announces the passing of Quevin Castro, a player and beloved member of our sporting family.
“Quevin Castro was much more than just a player; he was an integral part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on all those who knew him, both on and off the pitch.“At this time of grief, Real Sport Clube extends its most sincere condolences to the family and all the friends of Quevin Castro, expressing its full solidarity and unconditional support.”Castro (left) made three first-team appearances for West Brom (Catherine Ivill via Getty Images)Estrela da Amadora also issued a statement saying: “At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extends its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Quevin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massama structure. Rest in peace, Quevin.”A statement from West Brom read: “We are devastated to learn of the untimely passing of our former player Quevin Castro, aged just 25. The club will pay tribute to Quevin on Sunday, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of the fixture against Burnley. Rest in peace, Quevin.”Castro was born in Lisbon and started out at Sporting CP in the academy. He signed his first professional contract with Norfolk-based side Thetford Town in 2017, before going on trial to many other clubs including Chelsea and Arsenal.It was in 2021 when he moved to West Bromwich Albion, the club he would represent just two times — first against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, and then as a substitute against Swansea City in the Championship. He spent time with Burton Albion on loan, playing three times.Castro also played for several sides in England’s non-league before moving back to Portugal this summer with Real Sport Clube.
