His return lasted one drive. He did not waste it.Smith completed all seven of his passes for 65 yards and a touchdown Friday as New York beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-0. Head coach Aaron Glenn saw enough from the 35-year-old quarterback to say the Jets got what they wanted from their new starter. What did Geno Smith show Aaron Glenn in his first Jets game in nine years?Smith took the opening possession and moved the Jets 69 yards in 10 plays. The drive lasted nearly six minutes and ended with his 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jelani Woods.According to Jets.com contributor Jack Bell, Glenn praised Smith's command of the offense after the game.“Very, very efficient, he looked very comfortable,” Glenn said. “Exactly what we were looking for. But again, we still have some things we got to work on because our run game wasn't where it needs to be.”The numbers backed up the first part of Glenn's assessment. Smith went 7-for-7 and finished with a 144.9 passer rating. He completed passes to several targets and converted two third downs through the air. One went to tight end Mason Taylor for 10 yards. Another found Garrett Wilson for 10 yards and moved New York to Pittsburgh's 13-yard line.Smith threw the touchdown on the next play. His final stat line came from a tiny preseason sample, and Pittsburgh rested several starters. Still, Smith did what New York needed him to do. He moved the offense, handled pressure and finished the possession with seven points. That mattered after Smith missed the Jets' preseason opener because of a sore ankle. New York had indicated the injury was not considered serious, but Friday offered the first game look at its projected Week 1 starter. It also came with history attached. The Jets selected Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. His previous start for New York came on Oct. 23, 2016, before a torn ACL ended his season. The franchise reacquired him from the Las Vegas Raiders in March 2026.Smith returned after throwing for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 15 games for Las Vegas last season. His first drive back in green looked considerably cleaner. What still needs work after Geno Smith's perfect opening drive for the Jets?Glenn's praise came with an immediate qualifier. He specifically pointed to New York's running game. The Jets had the result they wanted from Smith, but one efficient possession does not answer every offensive question before the regular season.Smith also refused to treat seven completions on seven attempts as a finished product.“There's always room for improvement, but we're always going to strive for perfection,” Smith said, according to Bell. “I don't really get too high or too low on anything. I think it's about the process, and I'm really focused on the process.”That approach fits where the Jets are right now.Smith is expected to start Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans, so New York did not need him playing deep into a preseason game. It needed evidence that he could operate the offense comfortably after the ankle issue.Friday provided exactly that. SNY's Lucas Hutcherson also noted Smith's work under pressure during the opening series. He stood in to complete throws and kept the drive moving on third down before finding Woods for the touchdown. The bigger test comes when the games count and defenses stop treating the night like an August evaluation. For now, Glenn has one drive of evidence. Smith completed every official pass he attempted, produced a touchdown and walked off the field healthy. The Jets close their preseason against the New York Giants on Friday, Aug. 28. After that, the evaluation changes.Smith's second stint in New York has officially reached the field. His first seven passes gave Glenn very little to complain about.
