Lando Norris secured pole position for Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix after producing what he called “the best lap of my life” during qualifying at Zandvoort. The teenage McLaren driver, who triumphed last time out in Hungary before the Formula One summer break for his first win of the season, will start at the front of the grid alongside George Russell with his Mercedes teammate and title-race leader Kimi Antonelli third.Norris pipped Russell by 0.102 seconds just as rain started to fall at the seaside track as the Briton also secured his second successive pole after doing the same at the Hungaroring a month ago. “Well done, best lap of my life,” he said on the team radio after claiming first place in the Netherlands.Earlier, Russell had won the sprint race after leading from start to finish leaving him third in the drivers' championship, three points behind Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and 56 shy of Antonelli. “I'm a little surprised honestly,” said Norris following the end of qualifying. “A decent lap, I was pushing because you've seen how close it is, one hundredth, two hundredths can make a big difference in the end. “A good turn around from earlier today when I felt like we struggled a bit. We certainly felt very strong. The team did a good job so credit to them on trying to get a little bit more out the car and it certainly helped me today.“I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow. This is always one of the best events. Hopefully we can put on a good show.”Antonelli, meanwhile, admitted it had been “a difficult session” as the 19-year-old Italian – who turns 20 on Tuesday – had to settle for second row on the grid, alongside Norris's McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.“Overall, always found myself on the back foot,” he said. “Last lap did a mistake in turn one, lost a couple of tenths, it was my mistake. Shame for that, we had a real shot for pole.“In Q3 I thought we had a shot, we had a chance. When I started the last lap in Q3, I was too tense down in sector one. I thought this is going to be difficult. I was able to make it up the rest of the lap. It's a shame for that but it's all to play for tomorrow.”For Russell, it had been a good day after following up his sprint win with a front-row spot on Sunday. “Lando did a great job so congrats to him and McLaren, said the Briton.“It was a strong session. I thought we had it in there just to fight for pole but P2 I'm pretty satisfied with, especially after coming back after such a tough last few races before the break. I'm sort of getting in my groove again and I'll try to fight with them again tomorrow.“I feel in a good place and I just sort of feel myself again, which is really important. It was really nice to drive around here and these cooler temperatures made the track feel really fast, so it was a real joy for us all to drive and I'm looking forward to the race.”Seven-time champion Hamilton will start in fifth alongside Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, with the Red bull pair Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson seventh and eighth, respectively.“We changed quite a bit [since the sprint] and it didn't make a difference, pretty much the same pace that we've had all weekend,” said a frustrated Verstappen, who signed a new contract with Red Bull this week. “It didn't allow me to push or feel comfortable with the car.”
