Illinois football has featured a handful of quality deep-ball weapons over the past few seasons – and may have another set to emerge in 2026. But the Illini haven’t boasted an otherworldly speedster at the wide receiver position in quite some time.The good news for Illini Nation: Bennett Konkey is about to change that. The bad news: He won’t arrive until the 2027 season. In the meantime, all Illinois can do is marvel at Konkey’s ability and, like the rest of us, enjoy the show he appears poised to put on in his senior season of high school football.Illinois commit Bennett Konkey explodes in 2026 season openerOn Friday night, under the Burgess Field lights in Geneva, Illinois – a far-flung Chicago suburb located approximately 45 miles west of the city – Konkey and his Geneva High School squad kicked off their 2026 campaign with a bang.Konkey wasted literally no time making his mark on the game. First, he took the opening kickoff 100 yards, streaking untouched, into the end zone to give his club a quick 6-0 lead over Libertyville.Shortly after, Konkey blazed past the Wildcats' secondary, reeled in a wide-open catch and waltzed in for another touchdown – this time a 70-yarder. But he wasn’t done – and the first quarter wasn't even finished.— SLOCHE (@sloche_o) August 22, 2026Later, Konkey snagged a screen pass, beat his defender to the outside and sprinted down the sideline for yet another score, which helped extend Geneva's lead to 21-0 almost before either team had had a chance to break a sweat.According to Cole Sheeks of the Daily Herald Preps, Konkey registered 229 all-purpose yards in the first quarter. Konkey wound up finishing the game with 280 all-purpose yards, helping lift Geneva to a season-opening 28-14 victory.Konkey has 3 catches, 3 touchdowns, and 229 all purpose yards.We begin the second quarter of play in Geneva. 21-0 Vikings— Cole Sheeks (@ColeSheeks) August 22, 2026Konkey, who won the 100-meter state championship and 200-meter state championship in track earlier this year (including the former by a wide margin), is hands down the fastest high schooler in the state of Illinois. (And it’s not as though Illinois is a state that comes up short on athletes.)Thanks in large part to his blazing speed, Konkey is rated as a four-star recruit and listed as the No. 35 wide receiver in the country (per 247Sports). The Illini landed Konkey over Iowa, Iowa State and Northwestern, among others, back in mid-June.At 6-foot-1, 189 pounds, Konkey has average size at wideout, but he is bigger than most receivers with his speed. Pairing that speed with a solid catch radius gives Konkey a fairly high ceiling.If he puts it all together – bulks up a bit, sharpens his route running, etc. – Konkey could very well be a Day 1 contributor for the Illini as a freshman in 2027.Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
