KYIV — Russian drone and missile strikes killed at least seven people across Ukraine on Saturday, while a Ukrainian drone attack killed two people in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, officials said.The latest attacks came a day after a Russian drone strike on a shopping center in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih killed 16 people and wounded 130 others.Russian forces have intensified ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, putting further pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses amid a chronic shortage of U.S.-made Patriot interceptors, the only weapons in Ukraine’s arsenal capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said one person was killed and another wounded when ballistic missiles struck railway infrastructure in Kyiv overnight.Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had targeted a locomotive depot.In a separate attack, two people were killed Saturday afternoon in a Russian ballistic missile strike on the Kyiv region surrounding the capital, according to local authorities.Russian drone strikes also killed one person overnight in the Zaporizhzhia region. A separate daytime attack killed three people and wounded 15 others.Zelenskyy said another three people were wounded in an attack on a minibus in the regional capital, also called Zaporizhzhia.Meanwhile, authorities in Russia’s Krasnodar region said two children were killed and two adults wounded in a Ukrainian drone strike.Kryvyi Rih death toll rises to 16The latest violence followed Friday’s Russian drone attack on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, Zelenskyy’s hometown.Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha said Saturday that the death toll had risen to 16, while nine people remained missing and 130 others were wounded.Zelenskyy described the assault as a “double-tap” strike, in which an initial wave of drones was followed by another as emergency workers responded.A fire spread across around 9,000 square meters before being extinguished, while rescue operations continued.Kryvyi Rih has repeatedly been targeted during the war. In April 2025, a strike on the city killed 20 people, including nine children.Large-scale Russian missile and drone attacks have intensified this summer. Friday’s attack came only a day after another major overnight barrage against Kyiv killed 16 people.The United Nations said Kyiv was among the Ukrainian cities hardest hit in July, with at least 54 civilians killed and 202 wounded.Ukraine expands long-range attacks inside RussiaUkraine, meanwhile, has increasingly used long-range drones to strike targets deep inside Russia, particularly oil and industrial facilities.Russian news outlet Astra reported Saturday that a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region.Local Russian officials confirmed damage to an unidentified industrial facility and a logistics center operated by online retailer Ozon.Zelenskyy later said Ukrainian forces had struck the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in Samara, around 1,000 kilometers from the front line.
