A flight attendant has an important PSA for all flyers: For the sake of hygiene, do not wear any attire that leaves your legs exposed on an airplane.Charity Nelms, a former Survivor 48 contestant who has worked as a flight attendant for 11 years, warned against flying in shorts, skirts and dresses. “I am letting you know, from a flight attendant, the amount of things I have seen on the seat,” she said in a TikTok video. “Wear pants. Shorts, skirts, dresses, absolutely not. Wear full pants,” Nelms pleaded. “None of your skin should be touching that seat. I don’t care if you come on board and disinfect it. Nope, nope, nope. Wear full pants. Trust me, I have seen some diabolical things.”Cher Killoguh, a flight attendant based in Dallas, Texas, shared a similar message about wearing shorts while traveling. “Guess how many diapers got changed on the seats yesterday during my one flight? Four,” she said in an April TikTok clip. “Guess how many of those were poopy? All four. They changed them on the seat. And you wanna rub your skin on there?”A longtime flight attendant has warned travelers against wearing clothing that leaves their legs exposed (Getty Images/iStockphoto)Most airplanes receive a quick “turnaround” tune-up after every flight. These light cleans primarily focus on “galley areas, lavatory cleanliness, and trash removal from the cabin and passenger areas,” John Alford, vice-president of ABM Aviation, a leading company providing airline cleaning and maintenance services, previously told HowStuffWorks. Any planes that have done long-haul flights, generally 8 to 10 hours, and are expected to remain grounded overnight, will then undergo an overnight clean. “This clean is enhanced with a larger focus on the customer areas in and around seats, while continuing to also clean the galley and lavatory areas,” Alford added. He noted that all airplanes also receive a deep clean, which he described as a “detail clean, much like you would see performed on a car.”“The seat areas and many surfaces are removed to expose the inner workings of the seat, compartments, cabinets and storage areas,” Alford said. “Some airlines have specialized equipment that helps with a deep clean.”These thorough cleanings, however, only occur periodically and vary depending on the airline. Singapore Airlines claims to carry out deep cleanings every month; British Airways, around every 500 flight hours, according to Simple Flying; while American Airlines confirmed to One Mile at a Time in 2023 that theirs occur every 45 days. Nelms encouraged people to fly in long pants that fully cover their legs (Getty Images for Louis Vuitton)In her TikTok video, Nelms further highlighted the seatbelt as a highly contaminated surface that should be immediately sanitized upon boarding. “That metal part because everybody touches it,” she explained. “And also, you should be wiping the fabric part of the seatbelt because everybody pulls on that.“The amount of throw-up, baby vomit, bodily fluids, liquids that have spilled, random stuff that end up on those seatbelts,” she revealed. “Wipe them down.”Nelms additionally urged people to avoid using the lavatories in only socks. “It is never ever water on the floor in the lav,” she noted, “and your socks are like two big sponges, babe. No part of me touches that lav.”The takeaway? When it comes to flying, it pays to be a little paranoid. Wear pants, wipe down your seatbelt and wear shoes when using the lavatory. You never know what happened on that airplane — and, according to flight attendants, you probably don’t want to know.
