The Toronto Blue Jays have raised their playoff hopes as of late, performing like the 2025 version of themselves in the month of August. However, there's still work to be done to get into the playoffs, and their path only got more difficult following Friday night in New York City. The New York Yankees defeated the Blue Jays by the final score of 3-1. While the Jays will be held as losers in the game, they didn't play as poorly as the box score shows; that is, in one area. Another area showed how the Blue Jays played successful baseball and just ended up on the wrong side of things. From opener Mason Fluharty to newly acquired starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti, Toronto held its own. Arrighetti allowed three Yankee runs but overall did well in his debut for his new franchise. As a collective, from Fluharty to Simeon Woods Richardson, Toronto pitchers struck out 12 New York hitters, allowing four hits. The only downside on the pitching front was the five walks allowed, which ultimately played in the Yankees' favor. For a team looking to get back to the playoffs after seeming down and out no less than one month ago, the pitching staff did enough to keep the offense in the game. Countless times in Friday night's loss, Toronto kept showing why they've played subpar baseball in 2026. According to the box score, the Blue Jays offense went 1-14 with runners in scoring position, with Alejandro Kirk's RBI single being the only knock in a high-leverage moment. Toronto didn't struggle offensively against the Tampa Bay Rays, and they especially can't struggle against the Yankees in the Bronx. The only thing the Blue Jays can do now is turn their attention to fixing the negative and keeping with the positive. Toronto is scheduled to send Dylan Cease to the mound to even up the series, and given how the bullpen performed, things could easily go Toronto's way.
