Demanding the Tamil Nadu government to earmark more funds for the Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundar river project, farmers from the district unanimously passed a resolution and handed over a copy to the District Collector here on Friday.Prior to the grievance meeting that commenced at the Collectorate, the farmers’ associations submitted the copy to District Collector Sivaguru Prabhakaran.The farmers said that though the government had allotted ₹150 crore for the above project, it would be insufficient. “The CM should announce more funds in a 110 statement in the Legislative Assembly. This alone would give hope and instil confidence that the government is serious in implementation,” they said.When the farmers pointed out the delay in felling ‘karuvelam’ trees in the district, the Collector intervened and said that work was under way. Almost 50 % of the works are over. Waterbodies, in which the karuvelam trees had grown were being felled. Once the felling was completed, the desilting of the tanks would commence, he said.The Collector also said that compensation for farmers who had lost over 3,000 hectares, was awaited from the government. As and when the funds were received, the it would be deposited in bank accounts furnished by the farmers. With regard to the claims not being settled from the insurance companies, he said that the officials have been entrusted with the task and soon it would be executed.When farmers complained about the installation of 50 electric poles along the S V Mangalam Tank under the PWD which had been done without following the laid out guidelines, the Collector said that he would immediately look into it. The farmers apprehend that the Tangedco officials had installed the poles along the bund, which had been damaged. If the tank gets filled, there was every possibility of the waterbody getting breached, they feared.District Revenue Officer V Sankaranarayanan, Joint Director (Agriculture) Vasuki, Joint Registrar (Cooperatives) Jeenu, Ramanathapuram District Central Cooperative Bank MD Rajalakshmi and other officials participated.
