These everyday foods may seem perfectly fine in the pantry, but they can stay fresher and taste better in the fridge or freezer

Your pantry probably has a few foods that have been sitting there long enough to feel like part of the family. That bag of flour? It has a permanent address. The bottle of syrup? Practically paying rent. And those nuts you bought in bulk? You’re fairly sure they’ve been waiting patiently for their moment.

But not every food that can sit on a store shelf belongs in your pantry once you bring it home. Some foods last longer in the refrigerator or freezer, while others can lose their flavor, texture or freshness surprisingly quickly when stored at room temperature. In some cases, the difference is less about whether the food will immediately make you sick and more about preventing it from becoming stale, rancid, or otherwise unpleasant.
