‘He was repeatedly tortured in jail’: Imran Khan's sister alleges mistreatmentPakistan's jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan repeatedly told his sister that he was being tortured in prison, she said on Friday, shortly after he was taken to a hospital for a medical examination and sent back to jail within hours.Khan's sister, Uzma Khan, who was present during his examination, made the allegation as his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party accused authorities of violating a Supreme Court order by returning him to prison instead of keeping him under medical supervision.Khan was taken to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad early Friday, examined by a team of doctors and declared medically fit. He was then transferred back to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi at around 5 am, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.Khan's sister said the former prime minister had repeatedly complained of torture while in prison. There was no immediate response from Pakistan's interior or law ministries or jail authorities to Reuters' request for comment on the allegation.PTI alleges Supreme Court order violatedThe PTI said it would file a contempt petition, arguing that authorities had violated a Supreme Court directive issued earlier this week. The party said the court had ordered Khan to be transferred to the private Shifa International Hospital and allowed him access to a medical panel that included his personal physician.Instead, Khan was examined at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Tarar said the change was made because of a "security situation created by PTI workers" along the planned route. The PTI also alleged that Khan was denied access to his personal doctor, which it said amounted to another violation of the court's order."This is contempt of the judges. This is contempt of the Supreme Court," Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi told reporters after Khan was returned to jail.Khan sent back after doctors declare him fitSenior PTI members had expected Khan to remain in hospital for several weeks after he was allowed to leave prison for a health assessment, his first since February. However, doctors conducted a detailed examination involving an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician and declared him medically fit, Tarar said."A team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist and a physician conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit," Tarar said on Friday morning. The decision came after the Supreme Court ordered authorities on Tuesday to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days and allow him access to a medical panel that included his personal physician.Khan was transferred back to Adiala jail at 5 a.m. (0000 GMT), Tarar said.Khan has been imprisoned there since August 2023 and says the cases against him are politically motivated. The government denies the allegation. His lawyers have said his health has deteriorated in prison and that he has suffered substantial loss of vision in his right eye. The government has said medical reports have found no condition requiring immediate treatment.Supporters gather as tensions riseKhan's supporters gathered along roads in Islamabad overnight, throwing flowers at a vehicle believed to be carrying him to the hospital. The scenes were broadcast live on Pakistani television, in a notable departure from recent years when broadcasters often avoided even mentioning Khan's name.Afridi said the events surrounding Khan's brief hospital visit could increase pressure on authorities and energise planned protests."After what happened yesterday, the pressure (on authorities) will double," Afridi said, adding that preparations for a protest march planned for September 27 had picked up.The PTI has accused the authorities of deliberately restricting Khan's access to medical care and violating judicial orders. The government maintains that his treatment and detention are being handled in accordance with the law.
