NewsUK NewsManchester AirportPolice were called to Manchester Airport last night after a person 'encroached' onto the airfield, with seven flights diverted and at least 17 held in the skies08:05, 22 Aug 2026Updated 08:28, 22 Aug 2026Seven flights were diverted and at least 17 were held in the skies over Manchester Airport after a person got onto the airfield late last night.Police were called to the airport after a person 'encroached' onto the airfield, a spokesperson for the airport said.They added that a person was arrested at the scene after around 15 minutes.Seven flights due to land at Manchester Airport were diverted elsewhere, Manchester Evening News reports.One was the TOM439 TUI flight from Boa Vista in Cape Verde, which according to Flightradar24 had to be diverted to East Midlands Airport after circling over the Peak District.TUI flight TOM1MB from Corfu was diverted to the same airport.Another flight was a Ryanair from Agadir in Morocco, which was diverted to Birmingham Airport.Around 17 flights due to arrive at the airport were held, causing delays.The airport spokesperson confirmed the incident was resolved with flights now back to normal. A temporary fix has been put in place following the security breach.Departures were also delayed around the time of the incident. These included a TUI flight to Corfu which took off at 12.14am instead of 10.30pm, a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul which departed at 12.15am instead of 10.55pm, and a Ryanair flight to Dublin which left Manchester just after 1am with a delay of two hours and six minutes.Article continues belowThis is a Breaking News story.
