Audrey Werro won the women’s 800m on home soil at the Lausanne Diamond League, holding off Femke Broeders-Bol to win with a meet record time of 1:55.33s.It was a patient race from Werro, 22, who last week won the European crown by beating Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain and Dutchwoman Broeders-Bol. Here, on home soil, the Swiss athlete ran from the front, as pacemaker Myrte van der Schoot went out a little fast, splitting 54.64s through halfway — well under world-record pace.Werro surged smartly at 500m to cover a move by world champion Lillian Odira, 18, and had enough of a gap on the field in the home straight to win by eight hundredths. Broeders-Bol closed hard in second place, showing immense speed endurance to lower her own national record to 1:55.41s and jump three places on the all-time list to 18th.Odira, the silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games this July, faded in the home straight from fourth to seventh. Ethiopia’s Saida Tsehaye produced a personal best of 1:56.92s for third. This is a significant win for Werro, her ninth outdoor victory from 10 races this summer, with the odd one out being the European Championship semi-final, when she tripped with 150m to go and was advanced to the final.“I really enjoyed the race, the turnaround after the European Championships was very short, so I had to recover quickly, and I felt more tired than usual today,” she told Diamond League media. The Swiss athlete has put together one of the greatest seasons in women’s 800m running. Here, she took down Hodgkinson’s meet record, running 0.33s quicker than the Briton did this time last year. This is the fifth time in 2026 that Werro has broken 1:56, including her 1:53.80s clocking at the Stockholm Diamond League, when she beat Hodgkinson for the first time and became the quickest 800m runner since Jarmila Kratochvilova set the world record in 1983.Broeders-Bol pushed Werro to the line (Fabrice Coffrini/AFP via Getty Images)Only Pamela Jemilo (eight times in 2008) and Caster Semenya (five times in 2018) have ran sub-1:56 more times in one season than Werro, with the Swiss athlete scheduled to race against Hodgkinson and Broeders-Bol on home soil (again) next week, in Zurich. The trio should meet again in September at the inaugural World Ultimate Championships.
