The Denver Nuggets are reportedly adding a six-time All-Star to the roster for next season. After weeks of speculation and rumors connecting the two, the Nuggets are signing free agent forward DeMar DeRozan, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.BREAKING: Free agent star DeMar DeRozan intends to sign with the Denver Nuggets, league sources tell me. pic.twitter.com/op1sgEjfcj— Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes) August 21, 2026The deal for DeRozan reportedly for one year, worth a veteran minimum of $3.9 million.According to Haynes, DeRozan has been in contact with Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon in the days leading up to the deal, and was "anxious" to play for a contender. He feels Denver brings that exact opportunity, and now, he makes the deal come to fruition. And it's a big signing for the Nuggets roster; one that was due for a little more firepower after the loss of Peyton Watson, and now secures just that in the form of the future Hall of Famer, DeRozan. What DeMar DeRozan Brings to the NuggetsDeRozan will be heading into his 18th NBA season with Denver for his 2026-27 campaign–– having come off two years with the Sacramento Kings, and parted ways with them earlier this offseason. The No. 9 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, while he hasn't made an All-Star Game since the 2023 season, is certainly still a capable contributor on the offensive end, and has consistently averaged over 16 points per game since his second season in the league.Last season with the Nuggets, DeRozan played in 77 games to average 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting 49.7% from the field and 32.0% from three.Oct 8, 2025; Sacramento, California, USA; Sacramento Kings guard/forward Demar Derozan (10) reacts during the first quarter against the Toronto Raptors at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectIn Denver, while he's been someone who's started in over 1,000 career games, DeRozan could be due for a primary role in the second unit as the sixth man. The Nuggets haven't moved off of any of their five starters from last season, and might be better off letting DeRozan run the bench as a spark plug scorer. The Nuggets' bench has lost a lot of potency this offseason in the form of departures to Peyton Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Bruce Brown, and Jonas Valanciunas, but DeRozan is someone who can keep that unit afloat as a proven, accomplished scorer eager to contribute in a winning situation.Instant Grade: A-While the move to add DeRozan is likely in part related to the Nuggets trading away Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this week, this grade is simply based on how well Denver did in this deal to bring DeRozan onto the roster individually. If the Watson move were factored in, this grade for the DeRozan signing would not look as high as it does. But when looking at DeRozan's deal alone, you really can't imagine the Nuggets getting a better talent for the price they did.A high-level scorer on last year's Kings roster and a tested veteran with nearly two decades of experience now comes into Denver on a minimum deal and is one of the few free agents leftover from this summer who can actually bring a lift to Denver's second unit.Does his lack of three-point shooting consistency and defensive ability bode well for Denver's bench. Not particularly. And DeRozan isn't the most athletic, youngest player that the Nuggets' roster could benefit from. But the Nuggets needed a solution for their bench scoring after losing both Peyton Watson and Tim Hardaway Jr. in the same offseason. DeRozan can do just that, be someone who can close out games, and be a bargain signing who's right in the mix to win Sixth Man of the Year.Sign up for our free Denver Nuggets On SI newsletter, and get breaking Nuggets news delivered to your inbox daily!Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
