He has verbally agreed personal terms with United and is set to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option for an additional 12 months, subject to the approval of a visa.The Athletic reported on August 19 that United were closing in on a deal for Baleba, having made an offer of around £60million (€70m, $81m) plus £5m in add-ons. That bid fell below Brighton’s valuation but negotiations remained ongoing, with the two sides having now agreed a deal that will see United pay a fixed fee of £65m, with add-ons taking it to £70m. A sell-on clause has also been included in the deal.The Cameroon international is currently out with an ankle ligament injury he sustained during pre-season and missed Brighton’s goalless draw with Tromso in the first leg of their Conference League qualifier on Thursday.Following the departure of Casemiro on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte’s ligament injury sustained at the World Cup, midfield has been a priority area for United’s recruitment this summer. They have already signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a combined £83m.United tracked Baleba during the 2025-26 season after exploring a deal for the Cameroonian last summer. The Athletic reported in April that, despite Baleba’s underwhelming season for Brighton, United were still interested in a deal due to his underlying data and performances during his first two campaigns in England.Baleba joined Brighton from French club Lille in the summer of 2023 and has featured 112 times for the Amex Stadium club, though made only 23 Premier League starts last term.United take on Hull City in their first Premier League game of the season on Saturday.
