A combination of broken airport control tower equipment, an inoperative aircraft autobrake system, and an obstructed view of the runway preceded the runway overrun involving an Enugu Air Embraer ERJ 170-100LR, according to a preliminary report released today by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
The accident, which occurred on July 23, 2026, at Oba Akenzua II Airport in Benin, Edo State, saw the aircraft (registration 5N-ENR) skid off the end of Runway 05 and travel 325 meters past the pavement. All 68 passengers and crew members disembarked safely without injuries, but the aircraft suffered catastrophic landing gear and structural damage.
